Pennsylvania governor waives background check fees for volunteers
Gov. Tom Wolf announced that volunteers who wish to work with children will no longer have to pay the $20 fee for required child-abuse clearances and criminal background checks, according to PennLive.com
The fee waivers, which will go into effect on July 25, come in response to concerns raised by schools and other organizations that the cost of complying with the law could potentially drive away interested volunteers.
Additionally, the governor announced that the cost of these checks for other applicants who seek to work with children, such as teachers, will be reduced from $10 to $8.
The announcement comes on the heels of state House debates over proposed changes to the state’s new Child Protective Services Law which was signed by former Gov. Tom Corbett in October.
