Documenting Extended Driver's License or State ID Expiration Dates on Form I-9
Many states are extending the expiration date of state IDs and/or driver's licenses. How should the extension be recorded in Section 2 of the Form I-9?
Electronic I-9 Process
If the employee's state ID or driver's license expired on or after March 1, 2020, and their state has extended the document expiration date due to COVID-19, then it is acceptable as a List B document for Form I-9. Enter the document's extended expiration date in Section 2 and enter "COVID-19 EXT" in the Additional Information field. Employers may also attach a copy of the state motor vehicle department's webpage or other notice indicating the extension for these documents.
Remote I-9 Process
If the employee's state ID or driver's license expired on or after March 1, 2020, and their state has extended the document expiration date due to COVID-19, then the employee should bring documentation from the state showing the extension guidelines that the state has put into place. The technician will enter the extended date at the site and scan in the relevant supporting documentation.
Please note that this only applies to states that have made such extensions - it is not universal as of yet. Please check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles for information regarding the extension of expiration dates.
