Breaking: USCIS Increases Green Card Extension to 24 Months for Green Card Renewals
USCIS is taking the action in an attempt to assist Lawful Permanent Residents dealing with longer Form I-90 processing times.
Effective September 28, 2022, USCIS is automatically extending the validity of Green Cards for 24 months pending an active renewal application. This means that, if an individual files a Form I-90 to renew their Green Card, they will be able to use their old Green Card for 24 months after it expires. Currently, Lawful Permanent Residents can only use their expired Green Cards for 12 months after expiration.
USCIS has updated the Form I-797, Notice of Action, to extend the Form I-551 for 24 months while the Form I-90 is pending.
Impacted individuals can pair their Form I-551 with the Form I-797, Notice of Action, showing Form I-90 filing, as a List A document for Form I-9 purposes.
